Requirements for a gas boiler room in a house in 2020

When the boiler room is located in the cottage, it is necessary to observe the minimum requirements for the area and volume of the boiler room, as well as for the ventilation device and window and door openings.

Key regulatory documents

The requirements for gas boiler rooms according to Russian standards are given in the following regulatory documents in force in 2020:

  • SP62.13330.2011 Gas distribution systems. (Updated version of SNiP 42-01-2002)
  • SP 402.1325800.2018 Residential buildings.  Rules for the design of gas consumption systems
  • SP 42-101-2003 General provisions for the design and construction of gas distribution systems from metal and polyethylene pipes (is of a recommendatory nature)
  • Instructions for the placement of thermal units intended for heating and hot water supply of single-family or blocked residential buildings (MDS 41-2.2000) (is recommended only)

We single out the most important requirements (point by point) that must be observed when designing and constructing a gas boiler house in a house, as well as when designing a route for laying a gas pipeline:

According to SP62.13330.2011 :

p.  5.1.6 * Entrance of gas pipelines into buildings should be provided directly to the room in which the gas-using equipment is installed, or to an adjacent room connected by an open opening.

It is allowed to include gas pipelines entering the kitchens of apartments through loggias and balconies, provided there are no detachable connections on the pipelines and access is provided for inspection.

Gas pipelines are not allowed to enter the basement and basement floors of buildings, except for natural gas pipelines being introduced into single-family and blocked houses and industrial buildings, in which the input is determined by production technology.

p.  5.2.1. Laying of gas pipelines should be carried out at a depth of not less than 0.8 m to the top of the gas pipeline, case or ballasting device, unless otherwise specified.  In those places where traffic and agricultural machinery are not provided, the depth of the laying of steel gas pipelines should be at least 0.6 m.

p.  5.2.2 The vertical distance (in the light) between the gas pipeline (case) and the underground networks of engineering and technical support and structures at their intersections is recommended to be taken in accordance with Appendix B * SP62.13330.2011.

According to Appendix B * for underground gas pipeline construction (gas pressure up to 0.005 MPa) and the most common communications on the land of a private house:

  • Vertical (at the intersection) with water supply and sewerage – at least 0.2 m in the light (between the walls of the pipes)
  • Horizontal (parallel) with plumbing and sewage – at least 1 m
  • Horizontally (in parallel) with power cables up to 35 kV – at least 1 m (when installing a protective wall, a reduction of up to 0.5 m is possible)

According to SP 402.1325800.2018:

5.4 For heating premises, it is necessary to provide gas heating boilers with a closed or open combustion chamber, including single-circuit and double-circuit, or heating devices designed to operate on gas fuel, boilers with a coaxial chimney, gas convectors and other gas-using equipment that have permission to use issued in the manner established by the current legislation of the Russian Federation.  For hot water supply, flow-through, capacitive gas heaters or double-circuit boilers should be used.  Gas-powered equipment must be factory-made and equipped with automatic regulation and safety.  Gas boilers must comply with GOST R 51733, GOST R 54826, GOST R 54438, GOST R 54439, gas storage water heaters – GOST R 54821, gas convectors – GOST R 51377.

The installation of gas convectors should be carried out in accordance with Appendix E.

5.5. When installing a gas stove and a flowing water heater or boiler with a closed combustion chamber in the kitchen, the kitchen volume should be taken in accordance with 5.1.

When installing a gas stove and a hot water tank, gas stove and heating boiler with an open combustion chamber (single-circuit or double-circuit) in the kitchen, the kitchen volume must be 6 m more than the volume specified in 5.1.

When installing gas equipment intended for heating and hot water supply in a separate room (heat-generating), the area of ​​this room (heat-generating) should be determined from the conditions of ease of installation and maintenance of the equipment, but be at least 15 m 3 at a height of at least 2.5 m ( for a boiler with an open combustion chamber).

5.6 Gas-powered equipment operating on natural gas may be placed in the basement and basement floors of single-family and blocked residential buildings.  It is not allowed to install technical devices and gas-using equipment in bathrooms and sanitary facilities.

The requirements for evacuation exits from rooms where gas-using equipment is installed must comply with applicable fire safety standards.

5.7. It is not allowed to provide for the installation of more than two heating boilers or two storage tanks in one room.

5.8 Gas generators should be installed in accordance with the requirements of the manufacturers’ instructions: in a heated ventilated room, in an unheated ventilated room, and also outdoors under a canopy.

At existing facilities, gas generators should be installed after performing hydraulic calculation of existing gas networks and checking the throughput of the metering unit.

5.9 Ventilation of rooms intended for the installation of gas-powered equipment should be natural.  The hood is provided at the rate of three times air exchange per hour, and the inflow is in the volume of the hood and the additional amount of air for gas combustion.  The dimensions of exhaust and supply devices are determined by calculation.

Requirements for ventilation and smoke channels should be provided in accordance with Appendix G SP 402.1325800.2018.

In kitchens-dining rooms, the hood is provided at the rate of a single air exchange per hour and an additional volume of air of 100 m 3 / h for the operation of a gas stove (SP 60.13330).

5.10 As easily removable enclosing structures, it is necessary to use glazing of window openings with a glass area of ​​0.03 m 2 per 1 m 3 of room volume or use window structures with double-glazed windows in accordance with GOST R 56288. Reinforced glass, other double-glazed windows, triplex, stalinite and polycarbonate Easily erasable designs do not apply.

5.11. The door from the room where the gas-powered equipment is installed must open outwards.

5.12 The distance from the building’s building structures to gas-fired heating equipment should be taken in accordance with the requirements of the manufacturer’s instructions.  If there are no requirements in the instructions, gas-powered equipment should be installed based on the conditions of ease of installation, operation and repair.  In this case, the following requirements must be met:

  • gas-powered wall-mounted equipment for heating and hot water supply should be installed on walls made of non-combustible materials at a distance of at least 2 cm from the wall, including the side;
  • walls made of fireproof and combustible materials must be insulated with fireproof materials or factory-made screens of tempered laminated glass according to GOST 30698, which do not support combustion and flame propagation on an insulated surface, at a distance of at least 3 cm from the wall, including the side.  The insulation must protrude beyond the dimensions of the equipment case by 10 cm and 70 cm from above;
  • installation height of wall-mounted equipment should be convenient for operation and repair;
  • the horizontal distance in the light from the protruding parts of the heating equipment to the household gas stove should be at least 10 cm;
  • when installing the equipment on a wooden floor, the latter must be insulated with fireproof materials, the fire resistance of which is at least 45 minutes.  The floor insulation must extend beyond the dimensions of the equipment case by at least 10 cm.

5.13 In existing single-family residential buildings, the installation of gas stoves is allowed in rooms that meet the requirements of 5.1, but have a minimum height of up to 2.0 m inclusive, if these rooms have a volume of at least 1.25 times more than the standard specified in 5.1.  At the same time, in houses that do not have a separate kitchen, the volume of the room in which the gas stove is installed should be twice as large as that specified in 5.1.

In kitchens and rooms with sloping ceilings, having a height in the middle of at least 2.0 m, the installation of gas-powered equipment should be provided in that part of the kitchen where the height is at least 2.2 m.

Transfer to gas fuel of existing prefabricated heating boilers designed for solid or liquid fuel is possible when boilers are equipped with gas burner devices with automatic safety in accordance with GOST 17356.

5.14 Each facility where gas-using equipment is installed must be equipped with a gas metering unit in accordance with the current legislation of the Russian Federation.  Gas metering units should be installed in accordance with Appendix B.

5.15 When the gas pressure in the internal gas pipelines exceeds 0.0025 MPa, stabilizer regulators according to GOST R 54824 must be installed in front of the gas-using equipment, which ensure the optimal gas combustion mode.

According to SP 42-101-2003 it is recommended :

p.  6.17 …. In the room where gas-fired heating equipment is installed, window openings may be used as easy-to-remove enclosing structures, the glazing of which must be carried out under the condition: the area of ​​an individual glass should be at least 0.8 m 2 with a glass thickness of 3 mm, 1.0 m 2 – at 4 mm and 1.5 m 2 – at 5 mm .

p.  6.18. It is recommended for rooms intended for the installation of gas-fired heating equipment to observe the following conditions:

– height not less than 2.5 m ( 2 m – with equipment power less than 60 kW);

– natural ventilation based on: exhaust – in the amount of 3-fold air exchange per hour ;  inflow – in the volume of exhaust and additional air for gas combustion.  For equipment with power of st.  60 kW dimensions of exhaust and supply devices are determined by calculation;

– window openings with a glazing area of ​​0.03 m 2 per 1 m 3 of the room volume and structures protecting from adjacent rooms with a fire resistance not less than REI 45 – when installing equipment with a capacity of st.  60 kW or placing equipment in the basement of a building, regardless of its capacity;

– exit directly outside – for the premises of the basement and basement floors of single-family and blocked residential buildings when installing equipment with the capacity of St.  150 kW in accordance with the requirements of MDS 41-2

p.  6.19. In residential buildings, it is recommended to install household gas stoves in kitchen rooms that meet the requirements of manufacturers’ instructions for installing gas stoves, including kitchens with sloping ceilings, with a room height in the middle of at least 2 m , while installing stoves should provide in that part of the kitchen where the height is not less than 2.2 m.

p.  6.23 In the absence of requirements in the passports or manufacturers’ instructions, gas-powered equipment is installed based on the conditions of ease of installation, operation and repair, and it is recommended to provide for the installation of:

gas stove:

– against a wall of fireproof materials at a distance of at least 6 cm from the wall (including the side wall).  It is allowed to install the plate on walls made of hard-to-burn and combustible materials, insulated with non-combustible materials (roofing steel on asbestos sheets with a thickness of at least 3 mm, plaster, etc.), at a distance of at least 7 cm from the walls.  Wall insulation is provided from the floor and should protrude beyond the dimensions of the slab by 10 cm on each side and at least 80 cm above;

wall-mounted gas-powered equipment for heating and hot water supply:

– on walls made of non-combustible materials at a distance of at least 2 cm from the wall (including from the side wall);

– on walls made of difficult to combustible and combustible materials, insulated with non-combustible materials ( roofing steel according to asbestos sheet with a thickness of at least 3 mm, plaster, etc. ), at a distance of at least 3 cm from the wall (including from the side wall).

The insulation should protrude 10 cm and 70 cm above the dimensions of the equipment case.  The horizontal distance in the light from the protruding parts of this equipment to the household stove should be taken at least 10 cm.

When installing the above equipment on a wooden floor, the latter should be insulated with non-combustible materials, providing a fire resistance of the structure of at least 0.75 hours. The floor insulation should protrude 10 cm beyond the dimensions of the equipment case.

6.24 The distance from the protruding parts of the gas-using equipment in the places of passage should be at least 1.0 m in the light.

According to MDS 41-2.2000 it is recommended :

5.1 when placing a gas stove, a flowing water heater for hot water supply, and a heating unit for heating up to 60 kW in the kitchen, the kitchen must meet the following requirements:

– the volume of the room is not less than 15 m 3 plus 0.2 m3 per 1 kW of power of the heating unit for heating;

p.  5.2 When placing thermal units with a total capacity of up to 150 kW in a separate room located on any floor of a residential building, the room must meet the following requirements:

– the volume and area of ​​the room are designed from the conditions of convenient maintenance of thermal units and auxiliary equipment, but not less than 15 m 3 ;
