For a basic wall, field studs = ceiling(wall length in inches ÷ spacing) + 1. Add extra studs for corners and framed openings, then round up after waste.
Typical US ordering
Choose 16 or 24 inches on center. For an 8-foot wall, stores may carry full 96-inch boards and shorter precut studs such as 92 1/4 inches; verify the wall assembly before choosing the stock length.
What this estimate includes
The opening allowance uses three extra 2×4s per opening as a planning estimate. Headers, top and bottom plates, structural design, local code and unusual corners must be calculated separately.
