This calculator helps you achieve the precise vinegar acidity your recipe requires by diluting a stronger vinegar with water. Simply input the volume and acidity needed for your recipe, along with the acidity of the vinegar you have on hand, to find the correct proportions.
Formula
Amount of Your Vinegar (Cups) = (Recipe Acidity % × Recipe Amount in Cups) / Your Acidity %
Water to Add (Cups) = Recipe Amount in Cups - Amount of Your Vinegar
Example
Let's say a pickling recipe requires 1 cup of 5% acidity vinegar, but you only have 9% vinegar.
- Recipe Amount: 1 Cup
- Recipe Acidity: 5%
- Your Acidity: 9%
First, calculate the amount of your 9% vinegar needed:
Amount of Your Vinegar = (5% × 1 Cup) / 9% = 0.56 Cups
Next, find the amount of water to add:
Water to Add = 1 Cup - 0.56 Cups = 0.44 Cups
To follow the recipe, you should mix 0.56 cups of your 9% vinegar with 0.44 cups of water.
