Volume m³ = mass kg ÷ density kg/m³. The same kilograms give different volumes for different materials.

Use density that matches the material state

The same mass can occupy very different volumes because V = m ÷ ρ. For sand, soil, timber and other bulk materials, use a density that matches the actual state, such as dry, wet, loose or compacted. Packed household goods and mixed waste contain air gaps, so material density alone does not predict the space they will occupy in a container. For gases, cryogenic liquids and some chemical solutions, density also depends on conditions such as temperature, pressure, phase or concentration, so use supplier or measured data when those conditions matter.
