Pipe Square Calculator

Calculate the cross-section area of a pipe from its outside diameter and wall thickness. A 60 × 4 mm pipe has a metal cross-section of about 703.7 mm² and an inner Ø of 52 mm.

OD × wall (mm)Cross-section (mm²)Inner Ø (mm)

How to calculate pipe cross-section area

A = π/4 × (OD² − ID²), where ID = OD − 2 × wall thickness. This is the metal (annular) area used for weight and stress calculations.

Common mistake

Computing only the outer circle area. For weight and strength you need the annular area (outer minus inner), not π × OD² / 4.
