Converts cubic yards (yd³) to square feet (ft²) by dividing volume by material thickness.
How It Works
Converting yd³ to ft² is the reverse calculation: divide the volume by the thickness. The formula depends on the unit used for thickness:
Thickness in inches: A (ft²) = V (yd³) × 324 ÷ h (in)
Thickness in feet: A (ft²) = V (yd³) × 27 ÷ h (ft)
Thickness in yards: A (ft²) = V (yd³) × 9 ÷ h (yd)
This is useful when you know how much material you have in cubic yards and need to find out how many square feet it will cover at a given depth. The history panel lets you save results and export them as CSV, JPG, or PDF.
Examples
Concrete delivery: You ordered 5 yd³ of concrete for a 4 in thick slab: 5 × 324 ÷ 4 = 405 ft² covered.
Mulch: A landscaping truck drops 2 yd³ of mulch. At 3 in depth: 2 × 324 ÷ 3 = 216 ft² of garden bed coverage.
Gravel bed: You have 10 yd³ of gravel. At 6 in depth: 10 × 324 ÷ 6 = 540 ft² of coverage.
Topsoil: 3 yd³ of topsoil spread at 1 ft depth: 3 × 27 ÷ 1 = 81 ft² of lawn area.
FAQ
Can I convert yd³ to ft² without knowing the thickness?
No. Volume (3D) cannot be converted to area (2D) without a third dimension. You must always specify the depth or thickness of the layer.
Why multiply by 324 when thickness is in inches?
1 yd³ = 27 ft³ = 27 × 12 = 324 ft²·in. So yd³ × 324 ÷ in gives area in ft² directly.
I have more material than needed — what should I do?
If the calculated coverage area exceeds your actual area, you have surplus. Consider increasing the layer thickness, covering an additional area, or saving the material for future use.
How accurate is this calculator for ordering materials?
The formula is mathematically exact. For real construction, add 5–10% to your target volume to account for waste, spillage, and compaction.
