Water Volume

US Gallons
Water Weight

lbs
This calculator is designed to quickly find the volume of water in a cylindrical container, such as a tank or barrel. By providing the cylinder's diameter and the water depth in inches, you can determine the volume in US gallons and the corresponding weight in pounds.
Calculation Formula
The volume of a cylinder is calculated first in cubic inches and then converted to gallons.
- Volume in Cubic Inches (Vin³): π × (Diameter / 2)² × Depth
- Volume in US Gallons (Vgal): Vin³ / 231
- Water Weight in Pounds (Wlbs): Vgal × 8.34
Where:
- π (pi) is approximately 3.14159.
- 231 is the number of cubic inches in one US gallon.
- 8.34 lbs is the approximate weight of one US gallon of water.
Example
Let's calculate the volume and weight for a cylinder with the following dimensions:
- Cylinder Diameter: 22.5 inches
- Water Depth: 10 inches
Calculation Steps:
- First, find the radius: 22.5 in / 2 = 11.25 in
- Calculate the volume in cubic inches: 3.14159 × (11.25 in)² × 10 in ≈ 3976.07 in³
- Convert to US gallons: 3976.07 in³ / 231 ≈ 17.21 Gallons
- Calculate the water weight: 17.21 gal × 8.34 lbs/gal ≈ 143.53 lbs
