FAQ

What is the difference between CGST, SGST and IGST?

In India, on intra-state sales the total GST is split equally between the central government (CGST) and the state government (SGST). For example, 18% GST becomes 9% CGST + 9% SGST. On inter-state sales the full amount goes to the central government as IGST, later distributed to the destination state.

How do I remove GST from an inclusive price?

Switch to the "Remove GST" tab and enter the price that already contains tax. The calculator divides the total by (1 + rate/100) to get the base amount, then subtracts it from the total to get the GST component. Example: 1,180 at 18% → base 1,000 + GST 180.

Which GST slab should I apply in India?

Most everyday services fall under 18%. Essentials and food items are usually 5%. Standard goods sit at 12%. Luxury and sin goods like tobacco, aerated drinks or premium vehicles are 28% and may attract an additional cess. Check the HSN / SAC code of the product for the exact slab.

What about Input Tax Credit (ITC)?

Registered businesses can offset the GST they pay on purchases against the GST they collect on sales. If you buy inputs worth 1,000 + 180 GST and sell output for 2,000 + 360 GST, you remit only 360 − 180 = 180 to the government. This calculator shows the raw GST component — ITC is netted at filing time.

Is GST the same as VAT?

Conceptually yes — both are value-added consumption taxes collected in stages along the supply chain. Different countries use different names: GST in India, Australia, Canada, New Zealand and Singapore; VAT across most of Europe, the UK and Latin America. The math is identical.

Canada has GST, PST and HST — which do I use?

Federal GST of 5% applies everywhere. Some provinces charge a separate PST (BC, Saskatchewan, Manitoba, Quebec as QST). Others combine federal and provincial tax into a single HST (Ontario 13%, Atlantic provinces 15%). Select your province above to load the correct combined rate.

This GST calculator works for every major Goods and Services Tax regime: India (5, 12, 18, 28% slabs), Australia (10%), Canada (5% federal plus province-specific PST or HST), New Zealand (15%), Singapore (9%) and Malaysia SST (6%). Pick a country, choose a preset rate or type your own, then enter an amount. Two modes are supported. Add GST starts from a tax-exclusive base: for a 1,000 item at 18%, GST is 180 and the final price is 1,180. Remove GST starts from a tax-inclusive total: 1,180 at 18% reverses to base 1,000 + GST 180. Indian users get an automatic CGST / SGST split for intra-state sales and a single IGST view for inter-state sales. A reference table of country rates and a short FAQ cover CGST vs SGST vs IGST, input tax credit basics and the difference between GST and VAT.
