This Salt Substitution Calculator helps you accurately convert measurements between different types of salt in teaspoons. Because salts like Kosher, sea, and table salt have different crystal sizes and densities, a simple 1-to-1 volume swap can make your dish too salty or not salty enough.
Our calculator uses a density-based formula to ensure you get the right amount of saltiness every time, regardless of the salt type you're using.
Formula for Salt Conversion
The calculation is based on the relative density of each salt type:
Amount to Use = Recipe Amount × (Density of Recipe's Salt / Density of Your Salt)
Example:
Imagine your recipe calls for 1 tsp of Flaky Kosher Salt, but you only have Table Salt.
- Recipe Amount: 1 tsp
- From (Recipe's Salt): Flaky Kosher Salt
- To (Your Salt): Table Salt
The calculator will show that you need to use 0.50 tsp of Table Salt to get the same level of saltiness as 1 tsp of Flaky Kosher Salt.
