FAQ

What is the difference between a US gallon and a UK (imperial) gallon?

A US liquid gallon is 3.78541 liters (231 in³, by definition). An imperial gallon (UK) is 4.54609 liters. That makes 1 UK gal ≈ 1.2009 US gal. They share the name but are different volumes, which is why recipes, fuel economy, and container labels must state which gallon is meant.

Why are there US dry pints, quarts and gallons?

The US has two separate customary systems for volume: liquid and dry. Liquid units are used for beverages and liquids; dry units are used for berries, grains and produce. A US dry pint is about 550.6 mL versus a US liquid pint of about 473.2 mL — roughly 16% larger. Cooking recipes almost always mean liquid units.

Are mL, cm³ and cc the same?

Yes. 1 mL = 1 cm³ = 1 cc exactly. The SI definition: 1 liter = 1 dm³, so 1 mL = 1/1000 L = 1 cm³. Medicine, engineering and automotive contexts often use cc interchangeably with mL. A 2000 cc engine has a displacement of 2 liters.

How many liters are in a cubic meter?

Exactly 1000. 1 m³ = 1000 L because 1 L is defined as 1 dm³ (cubic decimeter), and 1 m = 10 dm, so 1 m³ = 10³ dm³ = 1000 L. This makes metric-to-liter conversion purely a shift of the decimal point.

What is a "barrel" in this converter?

Barrel has several definitions. The converter uses the US oil barrel (bbl) = 42 US gallons = 158.987 liters, the standard in petroleum and commodities. Other barrels exist: US beer barrel (31 US gal), UK beer barrel (36 imp gal), US dry barrel (≈ 115.6 L). If you need those, multiply or divide accordingly — always confirm which barrel is meant in a given context.
