Estimate a debarked log’s weight from geometric volume, oven-dry density and dry-basis moisture content.
Estimated log weight
Estimate excludes bark and does not model hollows, decay, sweep or density variation within a species.
Method
Smalian volume = π × length × (small diameter² + large diameter²) ÷ 8. Oven-dry mass = volume × oven-dry density. Estimated mass at the entered dry-basis moisture content = oven-dry mass × (1 + MC/100).
Density presets are estimates
Species presets provide typical planning densities, but density varies between and within trees. Replace the preset with a measured or supplier value when weight matters.
Limitations and source
The estimate excludes bark and does not model hollows, decay, sweep, embedded water pockets or volume shrinkage. Moisture content is dry basis. See the USDA Wood Handbook for density and moisture definitions.
