Estimate tapered log volume with Smalian’s formula, then apply your own recovery percentage and lumber price.
What the calculator estimates
Choose US or metric units, enter both end diameters and log length, and the calculator estimates gross cubic volume. Recovery percentage converts that geometric volume into a planning estimate for saleable lumber.
Smalian formulas
US volume in ft³ = 0.002727 × length in feet × (small-end diameter² + large-end diameter²), with diameters in inches. Metric volume in m³ = π × length × (small diameter² + large diameter²) ÷ 8, with all dimensions in meters.
Recovery and price
In US mode, recovered cubic feet are converted to board feet using 12 board feet per cubic foot before applying the entered price. In metric mode, price is applied per recovered cubic meter. Price and recovery are user inputs, not market assumptions.
Estimate limitation
Smalian models a log from its two end areas. Butt flare, sweep, taper shape, bark, defects, saw kerf, grade and mill setup can materially change scale and actual lumber yield. Use an approved local scaling rule for commercial transactions.
