Firewood Cord Calculator

Measure a compact firewood stack and convert its dimensions to standard US cords.

Firewood quantity
1 full cord = 128 stacked ft³

Standard cord formula

Stacked cubic feet = length × average height × depth. Divide by 128 to get cords. A standard full cord is 128 stacked cubic feet, often arranged as 8 × 4 × 4 feet.

Measure before burning

Measure the wood after it is stacked compactly, with pieces parallel and air gaps kept reasonably small. A truckload or loose pile cannot be converted accurately with this formula until it is stacked.

Buying note

Terms such as face cord, rick and rack can vary. For a smaller stack, record all three dimensions and compare the result as a fraction of the 128 ft³ standard.
